The History of Orange
People believe that orange is native to southeast Asia, particularly the eastern area of Assam in India as well as northern Myanmar and western Yunnan in China. Orange was grown in both these regions more than 7000 years ago.
The first oranges were small, sour, and barely edible. So, it was engineered in China to produce the sweet orange we all love today. This was done by cross breeding mandarins and pomelo.
Oranges reached the Romans about the 1st century B.C. as Persians introduced the fruit to them. The sweet variety of orange though reached Europe in the 16th century B.C by Portuguese traders.
Finally, Christopher Columbus introduced oranges to America in 1493. And in the mid-1500s Spanish explorers most probably Ponce De Leon planted the first orange trees in Florida.
The History of Cinnamon
Cinnamon like orange is native to Asia. However, historians don’t know exactly where in Asia it originates from.
Cinnamon was one of the first traded spices in the ancient world. People valued this wonderful spice so much that it had the same worth as Gold. People even gifted cinnamon to Monarchs and gods.
Indonesians transported cinnamon to East Africa, then local traders took it to the Roman markets. Arabs brought the spice through trade routes into Egypt, Italian traders would buy the spice from Egypt and take it to Italy. Portuguese traders went to Sri-Lanka in the 6th century. Sri-Lanka was the largest cinnamon producer at the time, that is when they started forming a monopoly in trading cinnamon.
