Aleppo soap is one of the oldest and most traditional soaps that take you back in time to the Turkish and Syrian baths. It has a unique texture and color that comes from the special process it’s made. It’s one of the most basic but most powerful soaps out there. It is made out of 4 ingredients only: Olive Oil, Laurel Oil, Sodium Hydroxide (lye) and water.

The History of Aleppo Soap

Aleppo soap originates from the ancient city of Aleppo in Syria. Being one of the oldest soaps out there and it has taught us the foundations of making modern soaps. This is why Aleppo soap has gotten the name “the mother of all soaps”.

The ancient city of Aleppo has withstood the fall and rise of many empires and has been the center of trade for many. One of the most important items that were traded was Aleppo soap that was a secret formula only certain families who were trained for years in the profession could make. To this day Aleppo soap is made in the same way, olive oil, sweet bay oil and water are mixed with sodium hydroxide, heated and then left to cool. Soap is cut from the form, and then left to age in the shade for minimum of seven months, during which time soap will change its color from green to its trademark brown.
