The History

Tea tree oil comes from the native Australia species of Melaleuca Alternifolia. Manufacturers steam distill the plant to extract the oil .

The tree is about 40 feet tall in the wild, but for commercial manufacturing they grow like bushes. Australia has a unique flora because it is of Gondwanan origin which was a super continent.

Australia was an isolated continent. So, It would take a few months to get to Australia from Europe. In 1606, a Dutch navigator was the first European to land on Australia and in 1770 Captain James Cook claimed Australia for England.

The colony was looking for something to Export from Port Jackson (Sydney today). After observing how the aborigines were using the plants, they started to copy them and see how plants actually cure certain sicknesses or infections.

The colony had to observe aborigines because Indigenous people are secretive. They tend to not share  information with outsiders and have a certain codes of respect and secrecy. Till this day many plants that have medicinal benefits are not discovered because of the secrecy that indigenous people have.

After seeing how the plants were helping with different issues, they became interested in researching them.

In 1920 Arthur Penfold discovered that tea tree oil actually works! It is a great therapeutic oil.

In World War II, Australian soldiers used tea tree oil as an antiseptic for cuts and infections.

An organization called Australian Tea Tree Industry Association (ATTIA) supports tea tree oil manufacturing and tea tree farmers. They also have strong control over the oil, making sure it is 100% pure.
